We finished as runners-up. An expected challenge from Warwickshire 2 failed to materialize but an unexpectedly strong finish by Staffordshire enabled them to overtake us.
According to the rules we could ask for promotion but in view of the loss of our Board 1 player* and the relative inexperience of some other players I’ve decided not to do so
* Ron Watson has said that he no longer wants to play correspondence chess so there are currently at least two vacancies in the team**.
** Our player on Board 7 stopped playing without letting me know.
At the beginning of the season I had stressed the importance of letting me know if any problem in communication arose during the game. I didn’t find out about the problem on Board 7 until July when the opponent’s captain rang me to tell me that our player hadn’t made any moves since February. I conceded the game as I suspected that our player was at fault although strictly speaking I should have been told of the problem by the opponent’s captain. Since I wasn’t told the game should have been declared to be a double default.
One of our players has asked if it would be possible for the players to play two games against their opponents, rather than one as is the case currently. I passed on this idea to John Philpott, the tournament controller. His reply to this and another question that someone else raised was :
The number of mandatory e-mail boards has increased while I have been controller, but I am not convinced that the time is yet ripe to move beyond the 50/50 split in the Ward-Higgs and Sinclair that currently applies. There are some extremely strong players who prefer to play on the top non e-mail boards. In the Minor sections I run separate all e-mail and no mandatory e-mail 10 board divisions which receive a more or less equal degree of support.
Any radical changes (and I have not forgotten your earlier comment about two games being played) need to be properly consulted upon. I regard it as already too late to do anything other than make minor adjustments to the rules for 2008/9, but a consultation on the future of the competitions may not come amiss next Spring.
Some players do play a second unofficial game against their opponents.
Below is the final cross-table for the Sinclair competition.
