A joint Manchester, Oldham, Tameside team entered the National Youth Chess Under 18 and Under 14 Finals in Telford. The Under 18’s picked up third place and the under 14’s were 5th. The event was a success and gives Manchester Chess Federation Juniors something to build on for the future. Thanks go to Phil Adams, Steve Rigby and Julian Clissold who accompanied the children.

The competition was good and the coaching from GM Andrew Martin was enjoyable and challenging. Manchester entered two teams, but had to withdraw one at the last minute because some of the children were unable to attend. The team came third in the tournament and the children received medals. Next weekend is 3/4th March 2012 when the team will again try and compete across the chess board at this level.
Results from EPSCA Junior Rapidplay, Broadgreen School, Liverpool, Saturday 14th January 2012.
The event is one of the highlights of the Junior Calendar and draws children from all over the country. It is noticeable that the event draws heavily upon Greater Manchester. Three of the controllers (Julian Clissold, Ahmed Abbas and Fiona Green) are based in Manchester and over half the entries are from Oldham, Manchester or Tameside. Also this year Manchester provided the youngest new Controller Tom Green. Tom is in a long line of eminent chess controllers as both his grandfather and his mother control chess congresses.
The full results have not been published and below are only some of the results of the Manchester Children. Oldham and Tameside children also did well and we will add those when they become available. Bolton vs Rybnik The match has been played over three meetings, using chess software available on the internet. There is a further meeting on 30th January at Bolton Girls School. The first match was discounted as we were getting used to the software. The children from Rybnik won the second game 6.5-7.5. Bolton won the third match 7.5- 6.5. All the children were able to say hello to their opponents and wave to them using Skype. The children were very excited and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the chess probably suffered from the novelty of the experience, and because most internet games are played at high speed. Chess suffers from being played too quickly. Rybnik and Bolton are now planning a live visit and chess matches or tournaments.
