Bolton Easter Congress
2nd-4th April
One hundred and five chess enthusiasts made the journey to Bolton’s Excel Centre to enjoy the annual Easter congress. This was on a par with last years turnout. The Open section was well supported and was won by the formidable duo of Adam Ashton and Ali Jaunooby of Three Cs.
In the Major section, Carl Atkinson of Cusaders was victorious with Peter Kobryn of Great Lever among a group in second.
The Knights was won jointly by Chris Stratford of Huddersfield and Anthony Roberts of Wallasey with excellent TPR ratings. Local players did well with the Grading Prizes. Two games by the winners have been put on the Games page.

AGM Presentations 2010
Here are the photos from the 2010 AGM, of the awards ceremony for the current season. Some winners where not present and had their prize collected for them.
On Sunday 17th October 2010 the Bradford and District Chess Association (BDCA) played a 20 board friendly match against the Manchester Chess Federation (MCF). Appropriate grading bands were agreed to ensure a close contest and the match was hosted by Idle Chess Club (Bradford), at the famous “Idle Working Mens Club”.
A free lunch was provided for all before the match commenced at 12:00 which allowed both teams the opportunity to have a chat and get to know one another in the spirit of this friendly match. Inspite of afew forced late changes on the Saturday, and one player failing to turn out on the day (this saw some slight adjustments to the team) we were able to play 19 boards with players ranging from UG to 216.
Following lunch, play commenced on all boards with Bradford winning the toss and claiming the white pieces on their odd boards. The match was played with friendly competitive enthusiasm by both teams which resulted in a hard fought match. Excellent wins came from Alan Smith, Derek Taylor, Howard Hughes, Steve Shephead, Edward Patten and John Reyes (who made the score 9-all) plus solid draws from Mitchell Burke, Ben Hague, David Pardoe, Mark Taylor, David Kierman, and Harry Brooks. After three and half hours play the score stood at 9-9 with two boards still playing. Bradford’s Gary Corcoran converted a Queen vs Rook and Bishop ending (with several pawns apiece) into a win against Alan Beresford and thus put Bradford in the lead at 10-9. The final match went down to the last few seconds with Bradford’s Phil Watson managing to capitalise on his space advantage in a 2 Bishop and Rook vs 2 Rooks ending (again with several pawns each) vs an unlucky Mark Whitehead and secured a win for Bradford to end the match BDCA 11 – 9 MCF.
Might I take the opportunity to thank Mitchell Burke who helped enormously in drumming up interest in the game and helping to find players for the match.
A special mention to the Bradford captain, Andrew Wainwright, who ran the match in the true spirit of the game, with good humour and excellent hospitality. The possibility of a return match next year was discussed, with Oldham as a venue. This is something that both sides were keen to play in and would allow Manchester to avenge the result!

Bury Rapidplay
Bury Rapidplay
Sixty three contestants braved snow, ice and fog to take part in Bury Chess Club's 16th annual Rapidplay Congress. Although the turnout was reduced by the weather conditions, diehard entrants from the wilds of Yorkshire and North Wales, and from across the Northwest found a warm welcome at Elton Vale Sports Club - one braving a journey from Sheffield by train that would be tough on any Sunday regardless of the weather. Played over six rounds in three sections with a total prize money of £660, the games were hard fought, and results were in doubt right up to the end of the day. Winner of the Open Section was David Jameson with a score of 5/6, making his journey from Colwyn Bay well worthwhile! Second prize was shared by Miroslav Gruca (Widnes) 196 and Mike Surtees (Bolton), and Grade prizes were won by Harry Lamb (Bolton) and Martin Sheard (Barnsley) 170. Winner of the Major section was Nicholas Barnaby (Bolton/Widnes) with5.5/6, second David Patrick (Courier, Halifax) and George Peters (Chesterfield). The Minor section was won by Harry Brooks (Great Lever) with 5.5 out of 6, second Brian Slater (Bolton) with grading prizes for Michael Horne (Crusaders) and Lee Baron (Bury).
