Manchester Under 14's travelled to Telford to take part in the National Youth Chess Finals.

The team came joint seventh, which was a satisfactory result for a very young squad who will be playing again next year. The outstanding results for Manchester were Andrew Horton (Didsbury Dynamos and MGS) who achieved 3.5/4 on board one, and Rohit Bagewadi (Bolton School) who got 3/4 on board five (both pictured).

Nigel Short plays Juniors from Manchester.

Grand Master Nigel Short is arguably the finest post war chess player to emerge from the United Kingdom. So naturally when he was invited to Manchester to play local Juniors, there was a queue of keen young chess players ready to take him on. The event was organised by Manchester Junior Chess in conjunction with the Manchester Chess Federation and Bolton School. The event celebrated 100 years of chess at Bolton School.

On Friday 18th February, Nigel came back to Bolton School and met boys and girls from the current chess clubs at the school. He showed them one of his most famous games (Short vs. Timman Tilburg 1991) and then proceeded to play thirty Bolton School children. After three hours of play he successfully won all boards. The best game prize went to Isabel Cotogni of Bolton Girls School and Worsley Chess Club.
It was good to see Alan Beardsworth (formerly of Bolton School and a past captain of the English Chess Team, and International Master Jeff Horner in attendance to help the children.

On Saturday 19th February, Nigel came back to Bolton School, to play children from all over Manchester and even some from further away. Again the chess knowledge of a Grand Master was too much for our juniors and he won all thirty games. But again some ten games were being hotly fought after three hours of play. The best game prizes were won by Daniel Abbas and Jennifer Neil.
Pictured are two local players, Jennifer Neil (Bolton Chess Club) and Daniel Abbas (Three C’s) deep in thought, next to Nathan Taylor (Bolton Chess Club). Jennifer and Daniel shared the best game prize and took home chess books from Nigel.

6th Place Oldham 15 points
7th Place Tameside 14.5 points

Ten teams competed.
All three teams will now compete in the national finals in Nottingham on 2nd April 2011.
It is worth noting that Manchester had by far the biggest contingent at the event. There were almost fifty children from the MCF area. No other area has anything like that number of children involved. Thanks go to Dale James and Steve Rigby from Oldham, Steve Mason from Tameside and Andrew Wilson from Manchester who managed the various teams. We wish them well for the final.

Manchester Girls play in the EPSCA Girls Final
The Manchester Girls Junior Chess team competed in the national finals at Oxford, on 26th March 2011.

The team did exceptionally well to come fifth in a strong field. Very good results from the girls below who all achieved 100% scores.

Thea Simpson - Bolton Girls School
Namitha Aravind - Bolton Girls School
Grace Gill - Bridgewater School
Hope Duncan -  Monton Green School
This was a particularly good result as most of the girls were 9-10 year olds in a competition for Under 11 girls.

EPSCA Under 9 Final
The Manchester area  Junior Chess teams competed in the national finals at Nottingham 1st April 2011.

Three Manchester teams competed in the national finals for the EPSCA Under 9’s. Teams from Oldham, Manchester and Tameside had all successfully qualifies for the final through good results in the North West Zone. Nineteen teams competed and the Manchester teams were placed as follows:

Tameside 19th
Oldham 18th
Manchester 16th

The overall result was disappointing but the children enjoyed playing against the best children in the country at this age group and will be back to compete in the under 11’s in the future. Pictures are of the Manchester team.

Outstanding results included the performance of Bridgewater School in the Under 9’s (12th place in their first attendance at the final), and the performance of Sam Brennan of Bolton Boys School who got a 100% record with 6 wins out of six.

Teams from Greater Manchester (including Manchester Oldham and Tameside) took part in the ECF Junior County Championships. The event was held at Eton College in the shadow of Windsor Castle.
The under eighteen team came in 8th place, despite having a very young team. Outstanding results by Jason Lau (Three C’s) who achieved a 100% score and Tim Chatys who achieved 75%.
The Under 14 team got off to a poor start, obviously overawed by their august surroundings, but they progressed well during the day, finishing joint 4th but only two points behind the winners. The outstanding results were from Daniel Abbas (Three C’s), and Jack Virgin (Worsley Chess Club). Full results
